Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
