Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a military coup in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also asked that the former president be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
